BaMa Symposium 2024 - English Information
12th BaMa Symposium - April 10th, 2024
This year about 100 students participated in the BaMa symposium. There was an about equal number of Bachelor and Master students. Students were able to participate in the plenary sessions of the KNVM spring meeting with renowned speakers on the human microbiome and the use of genome sequencing for tuberculosis diagnostics. During the breaks, the booths of the organizations on the exhibition floor could be visited. As an organization, we enjoyed the enthusiasm of the students as there was plenty of discussion about the research presented.
After the opening of the BaMa symposium by the chairman of the education section of the KNVM Dr. Girbe Buist, 7 enthusiastic students gave an oral presentation of the results of their research projects. During the meeting there were 27 students who presented their project on a poster. The program was very varied, microbiology was covered in its full breadth. This year, for the second time, the Mike Jetten award was presented for best Master thesis. The awards were presented by Prof. Mike Jetten himself to Lotte Nijman (Radboud University), Dieuwertje de Bruin (Leiden University) and Milou Stevens (Radboud University). This year, for the first time, the Fanny Hesse award was presented for best Bachelor thesis. Mirthe Raats (Avans Hogeschool), Naomi van der Mooren (Avans Hogeschool, Breda), and Jacobus (Sjak) van Grootel (Fontys Hogeschool, Eindhoven). During the lunch break there was time to view posters, discuss with students, and vote for the best posters (top 3).
The poster award was won by Emma van der Velden who conducted her research the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.
The 5-member jury had the task of identifying the winner of the best talk. All presentations were of high quality. Eva Bus from Hogeschool Leiden managed to convince this year with her research on bacteriophages in the treatment of S. aureus.
We thank everyone for his/her contribution to the 12th BaMa symposium and congratulate the winners of both best thesis, best presentation and best poster.
