BaMa Symposium 2025 - English Information
13th BaMa Symposium - April 2, 2025 at Papendal
This year about 125 students participated in the BaMa symposium, a considerable growth from the 100 students who attended last year in Papendal. There were approximately twice as many Master than Bachelor students. Students were able to participate in the plenary sessions of the KNVM spring meeting with renowned speakers on peri-prosthetic joint infections and susceptibility and protection against respiratory viruses in controlled human infections. During the breaks, industry partners' booths on the exhibition floor could be visited.
After the official opening of the BaMa symposium by the chairman of the education section of the KNVM, Dr. Girbe Buist, 7 enthusiastic students gave oral presentations about the results of their research projects. The program was very varied, microbiology was discussed in its full breadth. This year for the third time the Mike Jetten award was presented for best Master thesis. The awards were presented by Prof. Mike Jetten himself to Laura van Eijk (Utrecht University) and Adrienn Groza (Radboud University). This year, for the second time, the Fanny Hesse award was presented for best Bachelor thesis. The winner was Jasper de Wolf (Avans). All 3 winners were given the opportunity to briefly present their research.
During lunch there was plenty of activity at the 52 posters that were presented. The level of posters seems to increase every year. It was great for us as an organization to be able to listen to the many lively discussions between students. The poster award was won by Roxénne den Ridder (Avans) who did her research at the Avans lectorate Analysis Techniques in Life Sciences. Her poster was titled "Evaluation of transport media for swine Influenza A virus using Oxford Nanopore sequencing.
The 5-member jury had the difficult task of identifying the winner of the best talk, as all the presentations were of very good quality. Mariangela Longobardi took the first prize with her talk entitled ‘Uncovering the functions of sexual-stage Malaria parasite vaccine targets’.
We thank everyone for his/her contribution to the 13th BaMa symposium and congratulate the winners of both best thesis, best presentation and best poster.
We hope to put on another great BaMa symposium next year, see you in Papendal!
